    Description

    WOMAN Girl NEGRO LYNCHING Hanging Wagoner County Jail Oklahoma 1914 Newspaper
    (Note: additional images are located below the description)
    This issue is being offered as a piece of history.  We at Rare Newspapers offer such items being mindful of the truths that "Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it" (Sir Winston Churchill), and "To educate a man is to unfit him to be a slave" (Frederick Douglass)
    .
    Offered is an original, historic, & collectible old newspaper: EVENING TRIBUNE, San Diego, March 31, 1914
    * Wagoner County, Oklahoma
    * Woman Negro lynching - hanging
    The front page has a one column heading:
    "NEGRO WOMAN IS REMOVED FROM COUNTY JAIL AND HANGED"
    with subhead. (see) Surprisingly this issue is in good condition being from the "wood pulp" era. Very hard to find issues that are not totally fragile from this era in paper.
    Complete with 12 pages, small library stamps within the masthead, irregular along the spine, generally very nice.
    wikipedia notes:
    In March of 1914, Wagoner was the location of a brutal lynching of a 17 year old African American girl and her parents. The paper reported that two half-drunken white men walked into her home during the absence of the mother and found the girl dressing. The men locked themselves into her room and criminally assaulted her. Her screams for help were heard by her brother, who, kicking down the door, went to her rescue. In defending his sister, he shot one of the brutes. The other escaped. Later in the evening the local authorities, failing to find the brother, arrested the sister, who was taken from jail by a mob at 4 o'clock in the morning and lynched. From his hiding place the brother, who was 21 years old, could hear his sister's cries for help, but was powerless to aid her.
